Orca

A small pod of Orca was seen from the Butt of Lewis this morning.

There were four Black-tailed Godwits at Stiapabhat and two House Martins there also.

In Stornoway Woods yesterday there was a singing Spotted Flycatcher and a Treecreeper.

Re: Moth Night 2016

I'm hoping to run the moth trap here in Askernish for at least some of those nights, obviously it will be weather dependant, but if anyone would be interested in popping around and going through the trap with me to see what moths I have they would be more than welcome. I'll post again nearer the tim...

Askernish Moths - 19th April 2016

Back on island after an extended break to the warm sunshine of southern Spain! Moth trap out last night for the first time here this year, I didn't have very high hopes for a bumper catch as it felt quite cool and breezy. I was pretty pleased with the results this morning though:- 20 Hebrew Characte...

Re: Dead whale on Baleshare beach

Hi Roger Yes, it's pretty well rotted isn't it, and pretty stinky. I was also thinking Pilot Whale but the state the poor old thing is in I really don't know for sure. Be good if it attracted an Ivory Gull though - better keep checking it out ;) https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1546/24157039241_272b84...

Re: New Years Birding

Well we were able to get out and about again today and picked up some more birds for the year list, highlights were our first Glaucous Gull of the winter in Berneray, they seem to have been a bit thin on the ground of late, also Kittiwake and Black-throated Diver. Ian spotted a wintering Chiffchaff ...

Re: New Years Birding

Great photos Brian! A good start to the day with Water Rail heard here in Askernish. Then headed off to North Uist to see if we could catch up with the Gyr Falcon that has been hanging around for a couple of weeks, when we arrived at Baleshare we chatted with John who had just seen the bird, heading...

New Years Birding

Although the weather hasn't been particularly good we decided to go out birding anyway, as is our habit at new year. On the first we had a trawl around our local patch and picked up 34 species. After that we headed to Daliburgh, Kildonan, Bornish, Stoneybridge, Peninerine and Howbeg. On the second w...
