Nightjar on Lewis

Post by BrianR » 22 Sep 2015, 20:39

News via our Recorder of a Nightjar on Lewis on the 19th from Alex Cropper: ' The bird was seen on the A859 near Aribruach (approximate grid ref. NB230172). It flew from the side of the main road in twilight and I got a very good view of it as we passed in the car. The bird had pretty broad tail and flew like a butterfly appearing to turn on it's own body-length, spreading it's wings pretty broadly in the process, its body was narrow and it had a narrow head. My colleague in the car also thought it was a Nightjar. I'm pretty familiar with the species when they are migrating, particularly in Malta where they do tend to have a habit of sitting on or by roads after it gets dark.' Alex goes on to say 'can't imagine many Nightjars this far north?'

If accepted will be our 7th record - 1897, 1907, 1916, 1971 and two most recent in 2009 (in a South Uist garden in early September) and on North Rona in 2012 (in mid-June). Also a wing of one was found on the Monach Islands in July 1973.
