Barnacle Geese over North Uist

Post by BrianR » 10 Oct 2015, 21:26

Just before 17.45 hours this evening some large skeins of Barnacle Geese flew south high up east of Carinish. I grabbed my camera hoping for a shot but was unsuccessful and only succeeded in getting a pretty rough estimate as they disappeared in the distance. I think at least 500.

There was a similar movement of barnacle geese heading south along the east side of Barra this evening. I counted 185 in small groups in the hour before dusk off of Brevig. At the same time 115 snipe flew south: my highest count on Barra so far this autumn. It's nice to see some movement after a quiet period on the island.

Just before dark two skeins of Barnacles moved south quite high over our headland. Estimated between 170 and 200. At the same time 6 Brents moved south low over the water.

Skeins of Barnacle Geese flying low over Ardivachar Point and continuing south. Approximately 550 between 10.00 - 11.00 am, probably a serious underestimate as this was casual counting as they flew past the kitchen window!

Big movement south through South Uist this morning seemed to die off after 11am. At least 2000+ in the Bornish & Rubha Ardvule area. John Kemp will have a more accurate total.

Also quite a few brent geese moving too , largest group I saw at Ardvule was 65, but other smaller groups passing and 16 in the south bay there late afternoon.

By contrast 3 pink-feet on Bornish machair.

cheers, Andrew

Several hundred Barnacle Geese seen from my kitchen window today as they flew South over Balivanich this morning.

Also on the rocks behind the post office was a family party, (presumably) of Brent Geese. There was only one full adult and the rest were juveniles. They must be fresh in as when a jogger went by within a few metres of them, they just watched rather than flying away.

To add to the above at least 1,250 were seen passing over North Uist today. Most (two skeins of at least 400, probably more) came over Bayhead between 09.30 and 10.00 (René). Two much smaller flocks later (11.50 and 12.20) on the same flightpath (from NE over Clettraval and away to SW). My last sighting was of a small flock over Aird an Runair just after 13.00 hours. Also here were a couple of Ruff and at least one Lapland Bunting was heard.

A small passage continued today but on a different flight path in the clear conditions with small flocks mostly over the sea. From Carinish early this morning two skeins of unidentified geese (c350 and c40) were some distance away off Benbecula while at Aird an Runair at least 270 Barnacles passed in less than 2 hours up to 13.15 hours. There were also two flocks of Brent Geese (56).

At Loch Paible there were at least 500 Barnacles resting on the mud.

James How circulated today 17,150 Barnacle Geese now at Loch Gruinart on Islay.
