great white egret

Post by Bruce » 14 Nov 2015, 19:10

Thanks to a tip off from a crofter, I spent this afternoon watching a great white egret on Barra. It's apparently been frequenting the low islands opposite Bruernish for the past few days. Yesterday there was a juvenile surf scoter trying to get some shelter in the bay at Cleat during the gale, while a juvenile Iceland gull was feeding in the bay at Brevig. On Thursday there was a late whimbrel also at Brevig, perhaps the same individual last seen here in late October.

The great white egret was feeding along the shore at Ardveenish this morning giving outrageously good views as it fed no more than 20m from the road. Also on Barra today a new Siberian chiffchaff at Brevig, a juvenile Iceland gull heading north past Eoligarry, a sooty shearwater lingering off of Cleat, 5 snow buntings on the beach at Eoligarry (there were 32 there yesterday), woodcock at Northbay and Ard Mhor and 69 brent geese at Traigh Mhor. The willow warbler is still keeping company with 3 blackcaps and 3 goldcrests in the plantation at Northbay.
3 tree sparrows were visiting feeders in Brevig again this afternoon. I suspect these are the same birds that I first saw here at the end of August and were at Eoligarry in late October.

We had occasion to visit Barra recently when we caught up with the Great White Egret at Ardveenish. While we had great views and several fly-by’s, we only took the following record shot . Elsewhere there were circa 70 Brent Geese at Traigh Mhor and 5 or 6 Goldcrest at Northbay

Thanks to Bruce for earlier post; we enjoyed watching 62 Brent Geese feeding at the south end of the Traigh Mhor at noon today. Also pleased to see family group of four Whooper Swans on Loch an All, Balnabodach.
