Little Egret on North Uist

Heading north to Bayhead around 10.30 this morning I was surprised to see a Little Egret flying into the SE F6 wind. Quickly turning the car around the wind was such that onward progress for the egret was quite slow and I was able to track it to beyond Claddach Kirkibost and to obtain the attached record shots. Although not totally unexpected (even being mentioned on the Hebridean Smokehouse site) I had no idea where on North Uist it was being seen. Coming upon it like this, however, was far more satisfying.

With over 700 pairs breeding in England and Wales in 2013 it is not surprising that Little Egrets are now appearing with more frequency in the Outer Hebrides. Still quite an unusual visitor though and well worth seeing!

Did not continue south after all as Alex MacAulay saw it from his house at Paiblesgarry just before midday and then in the afternoon it was at Loch Sandary (Bill Allan).

Continuing on its travels (assuming the same bird involved) Oliver Foote had very close views at Gearadu, Grimsay this morning. It had gone when Oliver returned with his camera but reappeared there in the late afternoon.
