Woodcock on North Uist

Post by BrianR » 25 Jan 2016, 19:13

A recent report of a Woodcock in a garden reminded me how under-recorded by birders this species is throughout the islands. On North Uist it seems that there has been an increase in shooting parties targeting this species - even Langass Community Woodland is used (warning notices are posted on the gates of course). Anyway to get a slightly better idea of the winter population in one recent week the tally was 80. What a shame that these birds, most after migrating here from far way, fall victim in this way. Our longest recovery however involved not a shot wintering bird but one on its presumed breeding area in Russia (2,288 km from Stornoway where ringed).
