Glaucous Gull

Post by rcauger » 21 Feb 2016, 11:11

In a thin winter for Glaucous Gulls it was good to see this one yesterday 200 metres from home by the causeway between Grimsay and Gearradubh. Like the other gulls there, it was taking advantage of the sheep feed being provided twice a day.

Tony now back in residence at Port of Ness and immediately comes up with, I think, the highest number of 'white-winged' gulls that have been seen this winter: four Iceland Gulls (an adult and three 1st-winters) between the Butt of Lewis lighthouse and Port Stoth (the small cove on the east side) yesterday afternoon and an adult Glaucous Gull among Great Black-backs on the machair on the north side of Loch Stiapavat.

Another glaucous gull, this time a second winter bird, has been feeding on a dead seal at Traigh Eais, Barra for the past three days.
