putative american herring gull

Post by Bruce » 01 Mar 2016, 19:49

A first winter gull showing characteristics of American herring gull has been present on Barra since last week. It was initially seen around Borve and Craigston on 24th, but since 28th it's been frequenting Garygall and Glen on the east side of Castlebay during the afternoons. It's an extremely dark looking bird with smooth cinnamon/chocolate coloured underparts, a contrastingly pale head, heavily barred upper tail coverts, rump and under tail coverts, an almost completely dark tail and a pale based bill with dark tip and cutting edges. In flight it shows extremely dark underwing coverts. All in all a very striking bird. The greater coverts are not as dark as accepted British records of American herring gull however they're identical to many individuals photographed in the States!

The 1st winter American herring gull reappeared at Garrygall this afternoon. It was last seen here on 7th March and has been searched for both here and around the rest of the island since, so where it's been in the intervening period is a mystery. Again it was favouring the rocks near the road just up from the Leadaig turning and occasionally making forays into nearby gardens to take scraps.

The juvenile/1st winter glaucous gull was still on the machair at Allasdale today and the 2 rooks were at Castlebay.
