A foreign ringed Dotterel seen on South Uist

Post by BrianR » 14 May 2016, 09:03

A trip of seven Dotterel appeared on the Range on the 12th. Yesterday Barry Barnacal was taking photographs when a Peregrine flushed them. They did not go far as John Kemp later saw the small flock in much the same place (but only six). When Barry had a look at his photos he was surprised to see that one was colour-ringed and even better when he enlarged them he could read the ring number. After contacting Steve warden of Hilbre Island Bird Observatory Barry later learned that the bird had been ringed in ITALY in September of last year as an adult ♀.

It is believed that this is the first foreign ringed Dotterel record for the UK. The Migration Atlas gives wintering grounds as 'from Morocco in the west across semi-arid parts of North Africa to Iraq in the east'.

Barry has now sent details of the colour-ringed bird: ringed by Roux Poignant Giuseppe as adult ♀ at Testa Dell' Assietta-Exilles (Torino - Italy) on 5th September 2015. Barry's sighting was 8 months and 11 days after ringing and the bird had travelled 1686.94 km with direction given as 329,3 degrees.
