Ruff on North Uist

Post by BrianR » 23 Jun 2016, 21:27

Photo of the week on the BirdGuides Newsletter for 15-21 June by Roger Ridley was of three lekking Ruff at Aird an Rùnair. I was hoping the birds would still be present today - they were (four) but only seen in flight and they appeared to be fast losing breeding plumage. Maybe unusual to have lekking behaviour on the rocks/beach? Anyway no chance to photograph them and had to make do with a photo of eight Knot there. There was also a summering Barnacle Goose (not yet in moult as still flying strongly and perhaps not 100% Barnacle) and a couple of House Martins came over.
