Moths - Askernish - 25th June 2016

Post by YvonneB » 26 Jun 2016, 23:41

The forecast up until the early hours looked reasonable and it was a calm evening. We put the trap with the 125W MV out in the garden and the other trap went out between the neighbours house and the loch at the back - we have been experimenting with different bulbs in the smaller trap.

A pretty reasonable catch with over 30 species recorded.

First for the year for us: Elephant hawk-moth, Straw Dot, Dark Arches, Burnished Brass, Light Emerald.

A few Poplar Hawk-moths still around. Plenty of Magpie Moths. We had a selection of micro moths, managed to id most of them but not entirely sure about some of them - all help gratefully received (photos below).

Celypha striana I believe...

Scoparia ambigularis or Eudonia mercurella?
Edit: After consulting with more experienced friends i'm going for Eudonia mercurella

Originally thinking Eucosma hohenwartiana for this but i'm not sure, and it looks quite worn - missing a lot of scales...
Edit: after consulting friends I now believe this is Eucosma cana

Really don't know about this one, possibly a Zeiraphera spp ?? :?:
Edit: A friend is suggesting Bactra furfurana which it does look pretty good for :D
