A seawatch at Griminish Point

Post by BrianR » 12 Aug 2016, 20:52

Not a particularly favourable wind for a seawatch at Griminish Point but at least the weather had much improved from the previous two days. Loch Scolpaig had overflowed the track so access to the point was by a circuitous route from Callernish. Along the coast four Common Sandpipers together were unusual - most have departed by early August and usually only single birds occur in the Outer Hebrides later in the autumn. A 3 hour watch at the point included the following dispersing south: 89 Fulmars, 13 Sooty Shearwaters, at least 2,700 Manx Shearwaters (some possible duplication as some birds went back north and some large groups on the sea before dispersing south), a couple of Storm Petrels, single Arctic and Great Skuas (another amongst Manx on the sea was thought to have been a different bird), and a dozen Kittiwakes (two juveniles) and Arctic Terns.

Also off the point was a Harbour Porpoise.
