Glaucous Gulls at Baleshare

Quite a change in the weather from the murky conditions of the last few days and an invigorating walk along Baleshare beach produced no less than then ten Glaucous Gulls this morning. Four were on the flooded area south of the car parking area and I was careful not to double-count the others as they floated up and down the beach. Photo of one still mainly in juvenile plumage attached.

Two 1st-winter Glaucous Gulls flew N past Aird an RĂ¹nair in a one hour seawatch this morning. There was also a small movement of Kittiwakes (128 of which three were 1st-winters) and 35 Great Black-backed Gulls. Perhaps the Glaucous Gulls will not go too far N. There were 37 on Unst today so in view of the weather forecast we may expect some more to arrive from the N.

At least ten (probably several more) are still around Baleshare - up to three were around the whale carcass (the original one has disappeared after the recent storm) and up to seven have been on the flooded area south of the parking area.

A few more photos of the Baleshare Glaucous Gulls. There are now at least 13 present.

Most of the flock (61) of pale-bellied Brent Geese at Rubh' Arnal in late December were near the Baleshare causeway yesterday (ten less).
