Photographic Competition 2013

Post by Matt T » 16 May 2013, 09:30

...is now open!

In 2013, Year of Natural Scotland we invite entries on the theme of: Hebrides Little Five

Your Little Five can include any Hebridean wildlife, but they must be species that are:
  • Smaller than a corncrake
    Easily identified
    Found in the Outer Hebrides
You can submit five photographs, just one or any number in-between.

The Hebrides Little Five will be a key focus for Curracag in 2013, celebrating the unique natural history of the Outer Hebrides. We are linking this project with the photographic competition, so the photographs you submit as photography competition entries can also be your Little Five nominations.

Competition winners will be announced at the opening ceremony of the photograph exhibition, to be held in autumn 2013 and on the Curracag website. The exhibition will travel throughout the Western Isles.

The closing date for entries is midnight on Sunday 8th September 2013.

Entries should preferably be sent as digital image files, with an entry form to: maxwell_topside@hotmail.co.uk
Print entries will also be accepted.

Entry forms and competition rules are attached.

We're really looking forward to some great photos of your special wee beasties, so get snapping!

The deadline has passed and the entries are in! We've had a good crop of photographs submitted to the Curracag Photographic Competition. Thanks to all of who sent in images of their Hebrides Little Five.

You can see them for yourselves at the opening event of the exhibition, 6-8pm on Friday 4th October 2013 at Museum nan Eilean, Benbecula (next to the library at Lionacleit School). The exhibition will run until December and then travel around the Western Isles (Details to follow).

We look forward to seeing you there!

Hello folks,
I'm going away soon and will be unable to put up posters before this event. I'd be really grateful if you could print a copy of the attached and put it on your local noticeboard.
Notices will appear in the local papers and on relevant forums/Facebook pages.
Many thanks,

Hi folks,

For those of you who haven't made it to the exhibition yet, the winners were:

Up to 15 years:
First - Compass jellyfish by Jayde Brannigan
Second - Anemone by Skye Brannigan
Third - Bird's foot trefoil by Thomas MacAskill

16-20 years:
First - Dragonfly by Angus Jenkins
Second - Winkle by Sandy Davidson
Third - Meadow brown by Sandy Davidson

21+ years:
First - Green veined white by Chris Johnson
Second - Oyster mushroom by Chris Johnson
Third - Purple sandpiper by Ian Thompson

Highly commended:
Juvenile stonechat by Robert Beattie
Common blue by Simon Davies
Six-spot burnet by Paul Boyer

Well done to you all, and many thanks to everyone who entered this year. The standard of entries was high, which made the job of judging quite difficult. Thanks also go to Anne MacLellan for judging this years competition.

The exhibition will remain at Museum nan Eilean at Lionacleit until Christmas. There is also a quiz as part of the exhibition: just identify as many of the mystery objects in the display cases as you can and you could be in with a chance of winning you next years Curracag membership for free. Good luck!
