Whale and Dolphin Watching from Tiumpan Head

Post by Janet M » 15 Apr 2013, 20:14

I am an observer for the Shorewatch scheme of WDC Whale and Dolphin Conservation and, when conditions permit, go out to Tiumpan Head to do timed watches. It is still a thin time of year but already we have seen Porpoises, Common, Risso's and Bottlenosed Dolphins plus Minke and Sperm Whales. In the past I have also seen Fin, Humpback, Pilot and Sowerby's Beaked Whales plus White Beaked and White Sided Dolphins.
Sometimes they come so close under the cliffs that I can hear but not see them.
Fantastic!

Welcome to the forum Janet!

We look forward to reading about your sightings. Tiumpan Head certainly is a great spot isn't it, i've seen Porpoise, Common Dolphin and Minke Whale from there in the past - what a great place to have for your Shorewatching :-)

Hello Janet,
This sounds great, a paragraph or two on your experiences would make good reading for the Curracag newsletter. Contributions can be spent to enquire@curracag.org.uk.
As you are an active biological recorder you might like to come along to the Biological Recording Workshop on Thursday 25th April, 7.30pm at the Bridge Centre, Stornoway.
To find out more about the Outer Hebrides Biological Recording Project, visit its website at http://www.ohbr.org.uk or email admin@ohbr.org.

Christine
