Funghi Identification request

Post by virtualheb » 26 May 2012, 05:45

Hi all

Took this photo of some funghi - Balallan in April this year, there were many small pathches of it, on the moorland, off the old peat road, espeially where very wet. Some patches quite large, this one was about one foot across. I expect its something quite common, but as a novice at this, can anyone identify for me?

Hi Chris

I can understand why you think this might be a fungus but it's one of the foliose lichens: Membranous Dog Lichen Peltigera membranacea.

See this link: http://www.hebridensis.co.uk/Lichens/species.php?id=10

Many thanks for your information, I did wonder about the lichen, I will refer to the site you detailed when I see more that I can't identify, (which will be many) - am really new to this!
